Pencil, acrylic on Cotton 2013 ęDirk Fennema
Painting based upon a medical plaster casting.
This casting dates back to the 1950s. It was made by a famous
Dutch maxillofacial prosthetist. This particular object is part of a
collection of more than 1500 plaster castings and is being cared for in a
university museum. The objects serve as a reference collection for medical
purposes, being education or research.
This man in his fifties, suffered from a tumour or infection of his upper
right jaw. The disease destroyed the tissue in this part of his face and
he was offered a prosthesis. For casting this prosthesis, his maimed face
was impressed with plaster.
